One thing I love about my career is that I meet interesting people. Just by showing up to work, I can get introduced to new people, ideas, and places. And that’s how I met the artist David Ohlerking.

David stopped by, and we chatted for a while about art. He gave me his business card, which has an image of some of his work. Curiosity got the best of me. I looked him up, and fell down a beautifully painted rabbit hole.

Immediately, I loved the the hues and layers of color in each of his paintings. Layers and layers of color lay on the surface of the canvas, which David then manipulates to show depth and variety. The brush strokes are loose, yet controlled, giving a feeling like you’re entering his private dreamworld where the most mundane setting is made magical.

There is so much variety in David’s work, but it all bears a stamp of his innate style. I think this is because of his way of responding to and capturing color. There is something so lovely in the way he mixes and combines colors and values. His more abstract style is so expressive. It reminds me of Joan Mitchell, but more refined.
