I tried this dress on over a year ago, when I was still living in California. It’s hard to forget that day because, sadly, this dress is the one that got away.
Passing the time at Anthropologie, I stumbled across this chromatic canvas dress. It appealed to me because it was so artistic! The textile design reminds me of color field paintings. Color field painting is an abstract style of art that surfaced in post-war New York and gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. Major artists of this movement included Mark Rothko (1903-1970) and Barnett Newman (1905-1970).

So what happened? I loved the dress, and immediately thought of several places I could wear it. After exiting the dressing room, my then-boyfriend made a face. He didn’t like it – it was too “artsy” for his taste. My enthusiasm was crushed. He hated it. I left the store dejected – and without the dress.
Dressing room confession? Never shop with someone that doesn’t understand your personal style. Being a creative/artistic type, my then-boyfriend couldn’t related to my style (he worked for a corporation). Ironically, I broke up with him a few months later because our views on life were just fundamentally too different.
Perhaps fashion choices can predict relationship success rates. I don’t regret the breakup, but I definitely regret not buying the dress.
