In the past few years, many blogs have started covering street style. I think it’s a fun concept. For years, fashion forecasters have researched new trends by watching what was going on in hip neighborhoods. Come to think of it, I suppose it’s a national pastime. Who doesn’t enjoy people watching?
I love it. And I can’t tell you how delighted I was to come across this Life Magazine article from September 4th, 1944. ”Which Are the Prettiest?” showcases street style from that year in Des Moines, Dallas, Hollywood, and New York – respectively. A photographer was stationed in a busy area in each city and instructed to take pictures of all the pretty girls he saw. Life voted that the prettiest girls were in Dallas. Tough choice, because the New York girls look very polished, too. Who do you vote for?

I do think the Dallas girls were the most polished, and that was a surprise. But what about those Hollywood girls wearing shorts and slacks on the street!?
