I wish I could attend everything I get invited to. Last week, the Phoenix Art Museum sent me an invitation to the opening reception for Modern Spirit: Fashion of the 1920s. The show presents over 40 ensembles from the flapper era, including designers like of Chanel and Vionnet.
The 1920s are so interesting because of the social change that was occurring: ridged undergarments disappeared, women started to cut their hair short and wear makeup, and traditional gender ideologies shifted. Most notably, women gained the right to vote in 1920 with the passage of the 19th amendment. This freedom opened up new opportunities for American women: the ability to participate in sports, pursue academic studies, and to express their sexuality through new fashions. And of course, who doesn’t like hearing stories about speakeasies?
It’s tragic that I can’t be there. If you’re in Phoenix, be sure to visit the exhibit..

Oh my gosh, I SO wish I didn’t live so far from Phoenix! This exhibition looks AWESOME, I’ve always been really interested in the 1920′s art and fashion-wise!
